Nice picture:) Beautiful Garden. I Like Trees and shrubs too. But alas I have no room. Trying to find an interesting tree that doesn't grow too big:)

I love Japanese Maples for small trees. What zone are you? Sometimes you have to make do with large shrubs like cotinus.

I live in a 4-5 zone. My mother would love the Japanese Maple idea. But there is a big red maple right next door to where I want the tree.

There are so many nice small trees to choose from! Japanese maples come in green, yellow and orange leaves too. Another nice maple is acer circinatum or acer griseum. Styrax japonicus is also a lovely tree. I love Cornus Kousa 0r Acer japonicum. The list is endless. I have all these trees and highly recommend them. They all have lovely fall color(a must for my garden)
