I am so not computer literate. I am taking a Photoshop CS2 course right now and I suck at it. Anything to do with numbers and my mind shuts off...completely. Sizing images for the web has proven to be exceptionally frustrating. Ask me the latin name for a plant, and I can manage. Talk about percents and pixels and my head starts to hurt.
P.S. This image was inspired by my blogging pal Francesca Eliot. Check her out (link on sidebar), she has some really great stuff.
I like this!! I will enjoy watching your skills grow as the class goes forward! You'll get it.
That's a nice abstract. I stick with the simple approach for sizing images:
After I'm done with my maniupulations:
1. Image->Image Size
2. Resolution:72 pixels/inch
3. Long side (Height or Width) 8 inches
4. OK
5. View->Actual Pixels
6. Save or Save As
That's it. I don't use Save For Web because it strips out a lot of information such as shutter speed, aperture, etc. Also, it's a little more complicated.
For Blogger, I use 8 inches on the long side of the image and let PS figure out what should be the short side.
I hope that this helps!
Paul-I will give this a try. It sounds alot less complicated than the way I was trying.
This is a beautiful shot with great lighting and color.
As far as resizing goes, I think there are third party applications that can handle these kind of tasks easier. Here is one for Mac:

if you are PC user, I am sure you can find similar applications.
